HOW IT ALL BEGAN

AceHenna was created just after Quarantine in 2021

I began doing henna in early 2020 & continued practicing on myself & my little cousin, Auri, throughout quarantine. I am self-taught & what started off as me just wanting to give myself tattoos for fun, became something much more meaningful to me as I dug deeper into its roots. Henna is culturally significant in many areas of the globe, with my connection being through my Lebanese roots. With my practice not being classically trained, I’ve been able to develop my own interpretation & merging of worlds through various patterning & designwork.

I’ve always loved painting and drawing, but art became much more to me when my Mom transitioned to the ancestral in 2023. Painting became a conduit for healing for me, & unbeknownst to me at the time, the vulnerability in my practice would connect me to so many others.

Where Presence Becomes Art

The ancestral practice of henna provides space for individuals to connect within community & with themselves. Providing space for stillness, for quiet, or for sharing & company, it brings a meditative state to those involved & beautiful adornment along with it. This art form along with other visual arts offered, encourages presence & freedom. AceHenna’s offerings encourage inward reflection, as well as connection between one another through conversation, be it with words or through mark.

Aminah “Ace”

My passion and purpose is supporting those who have experienced intergenerational trauma and structural oppression to find healing within community through art. Creating space for individuals to access their inherent relational wisdom is my calling in life. We do not need to “learn” to love and be loved. We have that knowing in our DNA. It’s how our ancestors survived. This (art) therapy is about healing the parts of ourselves that learned to protect us when we or our ancestors were unsafe. When we come into relationship with those parts of us, learn to see them, accept them, thank them, and even love them, we grow into our capacity to honor ourselves and to see and be seen by others.
